L.N. Tolstoy, A.I. Shifman, East, Japan, Yasnaya Polyana, intercultural relations, Tolstoy's ideas of humanism and vital truth, Russian-Japanes

The article analyzes the intercultural contacts of Leo Tolstoy with representatives of the Japanese intelligentsia. The research is based on the work of the Soviet literary critic A.I. Shifman "Leo Tolstoy and the East".

The study of Tolstoy's intercultural relations with representatives of the Japanese intelligentsia began during the writer's lifetime: the publication of V.G. Chertkov's article "Tolstoy and the Japanese" was published in London in 1905. On the occasion of Lev Nikolaevich's 80th birthday, an almanac was published with statements by figures from the East about Tolstoy. Lev Nikolaevich asked his guests of the Land of the Rising Sun a lot about Japanese politics and economics, the life of Japanese peasants, philosophy, art and literature.

 Throughout his life, communicating with representatives of the Japanese intelligentsia and entering into correspondence with them, he reflected on the fate of Russia and Japan, on the future of Russian-Japanese relations based on friendship and intercultural dialogue.
