Euphemism, Fr
This paper, from the perspective of cognitive linguistics, integrates frame semantics and cognitive reference point theory to construct a “frame-reference point” analysis model, systematically exploring the differences in generation mechanisms between Chinese and English euphemisms. It is found that English euphemisms are primarily rooted in the cognitive framework of “individual agency”, tending to choose reference points that “externalize” and “technologize” issues; whereas Chinese euphemisms rely heavily on the cognitive framework of “interpersonal relationships and harmony”, preferring reference points that “relationalize” and “moralize” issues. This difference reflects the deep cultural cognitive patterns between China and the West in terms of individualism and collectivism, social mobility, and face perception.
